Summer Research Internship for Students

Nine weeks of graduate-level research in the field of biomedical sciences. Interns will conduct mentored research projects at West Virginia University and Marshall University.

Program Summary

WV-INBRE is pleased to announce its 2024 Summer Research Program. The program is nine weeks of graduate-level research in the field of biomedical sciences. Interns will conduct mentored research projects at West Virginia University and Marshall University. Participants will receive formal research training while expanding their learning experience through workshops, seminars on current topics, mentoring and use of state-of-the-art core facilities.

General Guidelines and Eligibility

Applications are requested for participation in the 2024 Summer Research Internship program sponsored by the WV-INBRE, which will run from May 28 through July 30, 2024. Participation is open to all students who are enrolled full-time at the institutions participating in the WV-INBRE network who will have not graduated by August 2024. Students at WVU and Marshall are not eligible to participate. Applications from women and members of minority groups are especially encouraged. A stipend of $6,000 will be provided to each intern for the 9-week period. Interns are responsible for securing housing, but WV-INBRE will assist in the process if needed.

Interns are required to prepare an abstract and present the results of their summer research project at the 2024 Summer Research Symposium in Morgantown, WV, July 30, 2024.

Research Placements

Faculty mentors will provide projects that will introduce students to contemporary research in fields of biomedical science including addiction, cell and molecular biology, cancer biology, cardiovascular disease, neuroscience, toxicology, and reproductive biology. On the application, students will be asked to list the names of four mentors in whose labs they would like to work during the summer program. Students will be matched with one of these four or another mentor of their choice.

Application Deadline

All application materials are due by the end of the business day, February 5, 2024.

Evaluation Criteria

  • Academic record, particularly in science related courses
  • Laboratory experience
  • Stated interest in biomedical research and career goals
  • Why the applicant would like to participate in the program
  • Recommendations from two faculty members at the applicant's institution and others, if relevant
